Target Participants
Paediatric therapists and other health / education professionals who work with children with cerebral palsy and related conditions in early intervention programmes, special preschool education centres, special schools and community services.

Learning Objective
1) Differentiate types of cerebral palsy and describe the clinical picture of each type
2) Discuss the theory, key concepts and treatment techniques of the Neurodevelopmental Treatment for children with cerebral palsy
3) Apply different assessment procedures in the overall evaluation of children with cerebral palsy, including postural analysis, therapeutic handling of the child and the use of different standardised test and levels of motor functions
4) Integrate the knowledge of normal motor development and different neurodevelopmental concepts in the evaluation and intervention of children with different types of cerebral palsy
5) Adopt the principles of family-centred care approach in service delivery
6) Select appropriate therapeutic equipment to meet the child’s postural needs
7) Develop a 24-hour postural management programme to facilitate the child’s involvement into different functional activities
Course Outline
1) The contemporary concepts and aetiological models of cerebral palsy
2) Normal motor development and key postural concepts in the first 12 months
3) The theory, concepts and treatment techniques of the neurodevelopmental treatment method (Bobath)
4) Different assessment procedures: neurodevelopmental postural analysis, different standardised tests, functional motor levels
5) The integration of different treatment approaches in a multi-faceted intervention framework
6) An introduction to new treatment methods
7) The selection and use of different therapeutic equipment to promote the child’s participation in different daily and learning activities within home and educational environments
Trainer
Dr. Sidney Chu has over 26 years of clinical experience in working with children in both child health and child psychiatry settings. He manages a large Paediatric Occupational Therapy Service for children with various disability conditions in the London Borough of Ealing. Besides a qualification in occupational therapy, he also holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in Biomechanics, a British Dyslexia Association Diploma in Teaching Students with Dyslexia, a Master of Science Degree in Health Psychology and a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Science and Social Care. He received the Brunel University Vice-Chancellor’s award for outstanding PhD research in 2005. His Doctorate research is on the treatment of children with ADHD. He has published many research and clinical articles in different professional journals, and also chapters in professional books. He presents different clinical workshops to health, educational and psychological professionals within the UK and also overseas. He is an honorary member of the Sensory Integration Network – UK & Ireland. He has also been awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Brunel University to recognise his contribution in the field.
